The app first shows a satellite image of the United States; when you zoom in the outlines of the individual maps become visible. Touch a map to install it; when installation is complete, touch it again to view the map. Note that to distinguish between touches and pan/zoom gestures it’s necessary to touch the map for about half a second. You can now move around the selected map and zoom in and out using the usual gestures.

Maps can also be found by searching for them by name.

A “current location” button will use the device’s location system (GPS or Skyhook) to show your position on the map, or to indicate which map covers your current position. It’s also possible to go to Google Maps’ coverage for your currently-viewed area. Topo Maps also integrates with the Panoramascope, another app by the same author, that computes the skyline as seen from any viewpoint.

These maps are scans of paper maps typically performed at about 250 dots per inch. The quality of the result varies but is generally excellent.

Be aware that downloading and installing most maps will take around five minutes or more: the downloaded file is a very large image that must be cut up into many smaller “tiles” for use. Once installed, however, operation is significantly faster and smoother than map apps that fetch data as required over the network. For a minority of maps we have performed this tiling process on the server, making installation faster.

Maps can be downloaded over both WiFi and cellular networks, but reports suggest that WiFi may be more reliable in some cases and we therefore recommend using WiFi when it is available.

As U.S. government publications these maps are in the public domain. Our server hosts the most popular maps and falls back to a collection at archive.org for the others; this collection has a few gaps including all of Alaska and Puerto Rico and odd maps or clusters of maps in other states. We do plan to fill some of these gaps in the future. Please get in touch before purchase if there are particular sheets that are vital to you.

If your position is not displayed correctly, your iPhone misses satellite reception.

Satellite reception depends on a clear view of the sky. If you are inside a building, it will not work properly in an unmapped wifi surrounding.

If Flirt finds no actual position, it will use your last known position.

Growing was developed by a pediatrician to help you track and measure your child’s growth. After entering basic information such as your child’s date of birth, height and weight, the application will calculate various percentiles such as weight-for-age to help you assess if your child’s growth is above or below average.
