Smart Cards

April 5th, 2009

Smart Cards$0.99 from Wright Software Smart Cards

On Sale!!! 50% Off!!!

24 decks for flash cards for less than the price of one normal deck!! Add, Subtract Multiply and Divide for 6 users! It’s like normal flash cards, but smarter!

This program mimics the method I use to study real flash cards with my son. It presents a card and the user inputs their answer. If they are right, it removes that card from the deck and you don’t see that card again. However, if they struggle with the problem it puts the card back in the deck and they will be asked the same card again. When they correctly and quickly answer all questions, it starts over.

I wrote the program over the Christmas vacation because my son was having trouble learning his multiplication tables. The first day I put this program on his iPod, I asked him to use it until he completed 20 problems. He did and five minutes later he asked if he could do more. He never wants to study math flash cards! He completed a deck of multiplication tables that day and every day since. On the third day with the program I told him if he completed the multiplication deck in 15 minutes I would buy him a $15 iTunes card. I thought he could do it in a week, but he did it that day! On the fifth day he did the multiplication deck in 8 minutes!

The program remembers which cards you know and which cards you still need to study. So you can break your study into short sessions. It also tracks the total time you have studied the deck.

Here are some suggestions on how to use the program.
1.Answer the questions a quickly as possible. If you don’t know the answer, guess. If you can’t guess, write the problem down and exit the program. Use the iPhone/iPod calculator to solve the problem and write the answer down. Start the program again. You will see that problem again. Writing the problem and the answer down will help you memorize it.
2.Different people have different attention spans. Start slow. Complete 10 or 20 problems at first, then build.
3.The timer starts when the problem appears and ends when you give a correct answer. If you are interrupted, exit the program. Take all the breaks you want, but exit the program when you take a break. When the program restarts you get a new problem and the timer starts again.
4.If you don’t use it, you loose it. When you can complete a deck in around 10 minutes that’s pretty good, but don’t stop. Go though the deck a few times each week so you don’t forget what you learned.

Features:
1.Supports 1 – 6 users.
2.Tracks which cards you need to study.
3.Keeps data when you quit to support multiple study sessions.
4.Four decks (add subtract multiply and divide) from 1 and 1 through 12 and 12.
5.Supports multiple sessions. You can switch decks and users and it remembers where you were when you come back to that deck.

Turing Machine Simulator$1.99 from Alexander Clauss Turing Machine Simulator

This app is a Turing Machine Simulator.

Students of computer science and maths are probably familar with Turing Machines, because the Turing Machine is one of the important models when analyzing if mathematical problems or algorithms are computable.

Usually dealing with Turing machines requires paper and pencil for simulating the program execution. This app will help here by providing several ways to execute Turing programs and analyze it in an easy and comfortable way.

You can write new programs for the Turing Machine, execute them and analyze the execution even step by step. It’s also possible to change the speed of the execution.

It’s possible to export and import Turing programs using email, so you can backup you programs by sending it by email to yourself, or share the programs with your friends by sending them the programs by email. Opening a hyperlink in these emails on an iPhone or iPod Touch will automatically import the Turing program in this application (in case it is installed on the device).

The app comes with some example Turing programs to play with.
